Step by Step Guide to Drive In Satisfaction

Step 1:  Find someone who trusts you enough to let you borrow their pick up truck.  Any size or style pick up truck will do.  Just as long as your family fits in the back of it semi-comfortably when it is loaded up with sleeping bags, pillows, and blankets.  In our case, we also brought our van since we can't all fit in the truck.

Step 2:  Find a movie your entire family will enjoy.  I highly recommend Toy Story 3.  We debated the second movie option, but in the end decided, "Does it really even matter?  There is no way our kids--or us-- can survive the entire double feature."

Step 3:  Arrive early and bring cash.  We were third in line.  We learned that Drive In theaters don't take debit cards.  What the heck?  Yes, so very 1950's.  But they do take checks if you don't bring enough cash.  Or you can go to Quick Trip and get cash.  Along with a bunch of 49 cent sodas.  And other snacks.  Those 49 cent sodas are one of the highlights of my summer, I tell ya.

Step 4:  Since you are there so super early, you should totally explore.

And take pictures of your shadow.  And yes, my girl is wearing leg warmers in July.  'Cause that is just the way she rolls.

Did you know that these snazzy things don't actually work anymore?  At least not where we were.  They are just there to look pretty.  We have to turn on the radio to hear the movie.

Step 5:  Take a bunch of pictures of your family while you wait.

Oh, and get a picture of you and your hubby if you are lucky enough to have him with you.

Oh, and get an obligatory cute kids picture.  Or ten.

And try throwing gummy bears at your kids to see if they can catch them in their mouths.  That is one of the most entertaining parts of the evening.
Now where was I?  Step 6:  Everyone visit the bathroom, then get ready for the movie to start.

Step 7:  Enjoy movie while trying to ignore pleas to walk someone to the bathroom.  Go as far as to offer an empty cup so they can pee in the privacy of the van.  Wonder what on earth you were thinking getting everyone such a huge coke, even if it was only 49 cents!

Step 8:  Sneak to the van with your hubby so you can watch the movie in peace.  Try not to cry cause the movie is so stinkin' cute.  Best trilogy ever.

Step 9:  Pack up and head home.  Decide this is a new tradition for your family.
Drive In Movies are the best!

this is my favorite post ever! you're really getting good with the tear-jerkers. we don't have any drive-in theaters near lancaster. i'm tempted to go up to shankweiler's, but it's such a long drive home afterward. i love all the pictures. your kids are such good sports! wonderful family memories you're building.... love to all of you!

Have you been to the Boulevard Drive In in Merriam?? We love to go there.

Jill, we haven't tried it yet but will have to next time. Someone recommended the Twin in spite of it being farther and then we saw it was playing Toy Story first. Boulevard have Karate Kid first, then Toy Story ... Ava would never stay up that late and they all really wanted to see that. So there you have it. :)

Love it! We have done the drive-in every summer (at least once a summer) & it's always a highlight. Oh, and we just take the back seat out of the expedition and plop it on the ground under the tailgate speakers & then we let the little ones roam around the back of the seat-less vehicle. Although, be careful if you bring those tiny jelly beans....I'm still finding those all over the car a year later-true story!
